SOCIAL EXPLORER

Here's a nifty tool for doing some economic and demographic exploration right down to the 2000 census tract level. Before you get started, I highly recommend taking the time to go through the animated map and report training guides because some of the tools are not intuitive.

There are a number of ways to use this site. For instance, choose 2000 census tract in maps, then choose income and one of the income views, such as HH (household) income over $200,000. Find an area of high income on the map and zoom down to the street level to compile a list of "rich" streets in a census tract when mining your database for new prospects. Or use the report feature to see if that rich census tract has the right age mix for planned giving. You can also download report information to Excel for presentations. Maybe you will think of a creative use for the slide show feature. Have fun navigating Social Explorer to discover what else it can do for you.

SOI TAX STATS - CORPORATION SOURCE BOOK

The Corporation Source Book from the IRS is a great way to get an overview of how an industry sector is doing and what average profitability is. Divided by major North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes, which are the newer, multinational version of the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) codes, the tables show average assets, liabilities, net receipts and more for a representative sample group of companies within each classification.

You might want to review the explanations of the line items before you get started:

To view industry data, choose a NAICS group, then a sub group and click on 2, which will open an Excel spreadsheet showing all returns with net income (a very helpful number). You can use this information to determine how well the industry is performing and estimate profit percentages (a simple calculation is net income as a percentage of total receipts).

To make it easier to get an overview, use the SOI (Statistics of Income) Table Wizard to Build Your Own Table using Returns With Net Income. Choose the line items you particularly want to see along with other data items and voilà, a simpler view for your analysis. It helps to read the table building instructions first.
