ZIPSKINNY

Get the skinny on a zip code to see if it's good for prospecting or for targeted direct mail campaigns. The data provided is based on the 2000 census.

From the home page, look up one zip code or click on a state to get a list of communities and then click on the community to get the skinny. Be aware that the community skinny does not include all zips for that community, so you may have to look up individual zip codes to get everything you need.

The zip code information comes complete with eye-popping color charts on such demographic information as educational level, marital status, household income, occupation, unemployment, number of years in the same residence (planned giving!!), racial diversity and age. ZIPskinny also provides a handy chart of comparisons to nearby zip codes. Or you can compare your own select group of up to 20 zip codes.

ROI Calculator

Be a hero to your annual fund and marketing folks and/or to management. Here's a handy calculator that they (or you if you wear those hats too) can use to calculate costs and return on investment (ROI) for a planned direct mail or e-mail campaign or use the calculator post-mailing to see how well you did. Just substitute the words prospect and donor for buyer and customer.  You must fill in all the data in the left column for the calculator to do its stuff. The expected conversion rate is how many prospects you expect to become donors.

THE HUNT FOR HISTORICAL ANNUAL REPORTS

An article in the Reference Coast to Coast column on LLRX.com (if you don't subscribe, consider doing so!) by law librarians Margi Heinen and Jan Bissett cites some free and fee-for-service sources for finding historical annual reports.
