TOOLS

How I envy all of you who are going to the APRA International Conference! What a great opportunity to learn from and network with our Canadian colleagues. In celebration of this terrific event, here are a few helpful sites from more northern climes.

CONTENTS:

NONPROFIT GOOD PRACTICE GUIDE

This site is searchable and offers helpful articles, case studies and tips in a variety of nonprofit management areas. Each category is divided into the subcategories Glossary, Pitfalls, Preferred Practices, Profiles, Resources, Taxonomy and Trends. Taxonomy links to resources sorted by topics within each category. For instance, under the category Fundraising and Financial Sustainability, find links to resources for topics from acknowledgment letter to prospecting to venture philanthropy. In the colored bar under the Web site name, click on All Resources or use the search box at the top of each page to search the entire site or click on Resources within a category to search just the category topics. Also in the colored bar, the Complete Glossary provides an extensive dictionary of nonprofit, fundraising, financial and management terms.

ABOUT - NONPROFIT CHARITABLE ORGS

About has an exhaustive list of topics for which it provides expert guides. Rob DeMartinis, president of the fund-raising nonprofit consulting firm, Hope Associates, is the site-guide for the nonprofit topic area. He has put together links to articles and resources, mainly covering nonprofit basics.

NETWORK FOR GOOD

Network for Good was founded in 2001 by the Time Warner Foundation, AOL, the Cisco Foundation, Cisco Systems and Yahoo! It bills itself as "the Internet's leading charitable resource -- an e-philanthropy site where individuals can donate, volunteer and get involved with the issues they care about. The organization's goal is to connect people to charities via the Internet -- using the virtual world to deliver real resources to nonprofits and communities."

This site truly focuses on the online aspects of fund raising. Links take you to articles about techniques and pratfalls, vendor sites, other information and resources about online fund raising, volunteer recruitment and communication. The best place to start is the site map -- while it's not as pretty as the topic or home page, it organizes everything on the site into nice categories.
