Periodically, there are queries on PRSPCT-L about sites where you may find the giving statistics a development officer or vice president wants from a researcher. Here are a few sites that come to your rescue.

CONTENTS:

NATIONAL CENTER FOR CHARITABLE STATISTICS (NCCS)

Broken down by U.S. region and state, you can see average giving per income tax return. Be sure to click on the text, chart and Appendix A & B links to get the full picture.

Check out the NCCS FAQs page (http://nccs.urban.org/faqs.htm) and other NCCS databases (http://nccs.urban.org/product.htm) for more info and statistics.

An explanation of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) classification codes is available on this site. The NTEE codes are useful if your database lets you create group codes for philanthropic organization by type. A cross-reference from the NTEE codes to U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and U.S. and Canadian National (NAICS) codes can be helpful for employment or organization coding.

The site also provides a Unified Chart of Accounts, which is necessary to translate your organization's financial statements into the numbers required for IRS 990 filings.

In the fall, NCCS promises a new level of data access through the NCCS Data Web. Visit the home page to see what else is offered.

CHARITY BROWSER

This site provides an overview of charitable organizations for each U.S. state. Get the total number of tax-exempt organizations and foundations, their combined assets and revenues, as well as counts of organizations by asset level.

FC STATS

The Foundation Center's FC Stats page offers financial data on grant making foundations aggregated nationally, by state and by major metro, as well as by foundation type, for the years 1997 through 2001. Get a list of the top foundations, by assets or giving, for each state for the years 1998 to 2001. Additionally, there are statistics on the growth of grantmaking foundations from 1975 to 2001.
