ENDOWMENT CALCULATOR

Here’s a nifty calculator from GrantCraft Guides, which is a Ford Foundation project.  This tool has a decision tree that allows you to assume inflation rates, decide to reinvest the interest or not and at what percentage, and pick a rate of return.  Then, best of all, it does the math for you.  Share it with your development officers as a tool they can access on their laptops during donor visits!

CART CODES

Does your database fill in a field called CART codes when you enter an address?  A CART code is a component of the bar code for bulk mail that expedites sorting by mail houses and the U.S. Postal Service.  If you are tired of complaining that you don’t have enough data to identify prospects and you live in a state with few or no wealthy zips, a CART code gives you a quick way to do some prospecting.

When used in combination with zip code (without the zip, the CART code is useless), CART codes define postal carrier routes.  But just the postal carrier route is also useless.  So you gotta love Melissa Data, which segments CART codes by zip into wealth and age segments and even gives you business and residential counts for the route, which are handy for direct mail.

Choose wealthy and upscale CART codes to send your development officers out on discovery visits.  Add in the age segment and steady giving patterns from your own database to uncover planned gift prospects too.  Midscale and upper middle segments are good annual giving segments.

It will take you some time to create an Excel spreadsheet for your own and neighboring counties, but it may be well worth your efforts!  To better understand CART codes -- and zip codes for that matter -- and how they work, visit:

FAT PITCH INSIDER BROWSER

Here’s a Web site that’s visually confusing and messy (can you say "white space?"), but provides great insider stock holding information.  Search by ticker or company name and get a list of top insiders, their stock and options holdings from the latest SEC filings and the percent of outstanding shares owned.  If you click on the individual, the insider lists narrow to that person.  Then move up the page to do a top link search at Yahoo! Finance, where you might find the person’s most recent insider transactions or maybe a link to their Wikipedia page or some other tidbit (sort of a random grab-bag pick).  Fat Pitch also provides a list of related entities using the same address on their SEC filings and you can click on the names to get their shareholdings and companies.

Take a few minutes to explore Largest Money Managers; High Networth Individuals; the Stock Index Guide; Hedge Fund Guide; Industry Guide and ETF/Mutual Funds links, where you will find lists of individuals and companies and their wealth and/or market performance records.
