Sometimes we are lucky when we are researching a prospect and discover his or her religion. Religious beliefs can have a great impact on why someone gives, what causes a prospect supports, the timing of a gift and whether or not the donor would prefer anonymity. In addition, researchers should caution development officers about holidays related to religious preferences -- some holidays are a great time to make contact or an ask and some are definitely not. In an effort to be more sensitive to religious diversity, Indiana University at Bloomington has posted a calendar covering 2006 to 2012 that includes holidays from the major religions. The calendar can help us be more sensitive to our donors. http://www.indiana.edu/~deanfac/rel_hol_cal.html
Are you finding more women business owners on your prospect and board nominee lists? The U.S. Small Business Administration has sponsored studies on women who are business owners, venture capitalists, franchisees and sole proprietors. The studies go back to 1998 on this page, with a link to more historical research. Today's growing business segment provides tomorrow's donors. Charles Knight, principal of Charles Knight SEO (http://charlesknightseo.com/), a search engine optimization firm in Virginia, gives very, very (and I mean very) brief highlights of some newer search engines and, at the end, provides links to the search engines. He raises the question of whether these new engines can challenge marketplace giant Google . . . what better way to find out than to play with them? http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_100_alternative_search_engines.php
