| TOOLS CONTENTS: Inside Higher Ed is a new Web site rivaling the Chronicle of Higher Education, but founded on a purportedly different paradigm. According to the site, "Inside Higher Ed was founded in 2004 by three executives with decades of expertise in higher education, journalism and recruitment. We believed that higher education was evolving quickly and radically, and that the time was right for new models of providing information and career services for professionals in academe." From a quick review, it appears to be more issue and controversy oriented, in keeping with their paradigm, than the Chronicle. There are only two sections, News and Views, as opposed to the Chron's fourteen. Both offerings are less extensive than the Chron's, but they are free for your reading pleasure. The writing is crisp, to-the-point and interesting. But it's definitely biased and provocative, so don't expect objectivity, persuasion and finesse from News or Views. There were some pretty glaring grammar and spelling errors, which they need to start catching if they want to compete with well-established providers like the Chron. Inside Higher Ed certainly has a good collection of job listings and a much more extensive free, advanced search function than the Chronicle. You can search by keyword, category, city, state, employment type and minimum salary. If you create an account, you can also save searches, get job alerts via e-mail and establish an online portfolio. A majority of the development jobs were at the director level or above and in major metros, but hopefully the range and location of offerings will expand as the site becomes more widely known. The founders' enthusiasm for their vision is apparent. It will be interesting to see how this site grows and changes over time. http://www.insidehighered.com/
