Eleanor Brown of Pomona College and Al Slivinski of the University of Western Ontario have posted their 2000 article about charitable decision-making on the Claremont College Web site. The authors compared couples to singles and took some interesting factors into account, such as who was the higher wage earner among spouses. It makes fascinating reading and could have some impact on how researchers and development officers develop cultivation plans. http://econ.claremontmckenna.edu/papers/2000-45.pdf This site was developed by James Ryley, a former patent researcher with Web development experience, who wanted a better search engine for his patent research. The site covers U.S. patents and applications and European patents. Japanese patent abstracts are forthcoming. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/search.html The search functions are much more flexible than those on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office site at: http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html This site is a great example of why they should always consult a researcher about search design! Researchers can use the field codes in the Advanced Search at the top of the page to build a Boolean search, but the Quick Search below it is much easier. You can do a proximity search and use the word stemming, search term weighting and relevancy ranking features. There are nice examples of how to use these functions at: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/faq.html#best One of the really great features is that search terms are highlighted in the text. I love it when a site helps me work faster. For amusement, read the site's Crazy Patents page. It's amazing that some of these boneheaded ideas were granted patents. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/crazy.html All Ryley asks when you use his search engine is that you share the URL with others. If you ever need to find an annual report (10K) or quarterly report (10Q) for a public company PDQ, here's a free site to try. Just click on the appropriate alphabetic group, find your company and select the report from the chart of filings. The filings go back as far as 1995, but not all of them will be there and sometimes the most recent filing is missing. If you took pictures at your organization's event that attendees will want to see, or need a staff or board photo gallery, this free utility can help you create a Web-based photo album. It will even upload pictures you took with your phone. Send the resulting URL to a select group or share it with the world by submitting it to search engines. http://www.mysharedphotos.com/service/gettingstarted.aspx
