Researchers Una Okonkwo Osili and Dan Du bring us an interesting study of immigrant participation in the U.S. charitable giving culture. The study is based on data from the Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy Panel Study (COPPS) and was conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, using its Panel Study of Income Dynamics. You will need to have a high tolerance for social science research jargon. In this 2002 working research paper (also based on COPPS data), Richard Steinberg, Mark Wilhelm, Patrick Rooney and Eleanor Brown ask the question, "Does the source of income affect charitable giving?" Sure, you betcha! Find out which wealth sources lead to higher charitable giving. http://php.indiana.edu/~rsteinbe/inherit.pdf
A list of other research and presentations using COPPS data is available. The full-text versions of many of the papers can be found by Googling the title from the list. http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu/Research/COPPS/panelstudy.aspx
Geared toward helping community foundations cultivate women donors, this brief from the Council of Michigan Foundations contains a multitude of information bytes about how and why women give and how to capture their interest. http://www.cmif.org/Documents/5168womenpaper.pdf
