SUPPORTING ADVANCEMENT.COM

Brian Dowling at University of Toronto has, of his great good will, set up this terrific page of advancement resources. There are links to other Web pages and articles galore. If you don't know how to do it or want to see how another nonprofit is doing it, look here first. There are sample forms and examples of job descriptions, training materials, policies, reports and gift agreements, as well as articles, presentations and links to other advancement sites (and much, much more).

The site is divided into categories: Employment, Like Minded, More With Less, Philanthropy, Potpourri, Records, Reporting, Research, Revenue, Systems and Web Sightings. Employment provides job postings and links to job listing sites, training and hiring materials, job descriptions and templates thereof, and more. Go to Like Minded for blogs, listservs and consultant sites that provide white papers and other resources.

Articles about operations planning and budget resources are under the heading More with Less. Philanthropy takes you to nonprofit sites, like AFP and APRA, and resources like GuideStar. Records covers records management and mailings. Advice about reporting, sample reports and data analysis are offered by a variety of gurus under Reporting.

Link to research pages, blogs and a (very) few how-to pages under Research. Revenue is all about raising it. Get with the program(ing) and learn about data management under Systems. Web sightings is not a list of helpful links, but about building and maximizing the utility of your own Web site. Finally, Potpourri contains anything that didn’t come under the other headings.

Brian builds this site from his own Web explorations and with the contributions of others. If you know some great Web sites or have an interesting presentation or some helpful materials or forms you have developed, I encourage you to submit them to share with your peers. Each category of the site provides an opportunity for you to do this or you can go directly to the contribution page at http://www.supportingadvancement.com/contribute/contribute.htm. He also will post professional development events, such as seminars and conferences.

This is a supremely useful site for developing or deepening your professional knowledge -- especially for those who wear more than one hat, have been given or are considering taking on new responsibilities or who manage advancement services. Take some time to explore the site’s many offerings and increase your knowledge. You can search the site or use the home page or site directory to find what you need.
