CHICAGOIST

Chicagoist, the second Web site published by Gothamist LLC of New York City, is a site about Chicago area news and events, restaurants and nightlife, happenings and observations. Both Chicago and New York City "ist" sites (and more) are authored by a growing group of hard-working bloggers and average 8,000-10,000 visitors each day. Readers are encouraged to leave comments, purchase advertisements or submit photos to the Chicagoist site by tagging them Chicagoist in Flickr.

COMMON DREAMS

Founded in 1997, Common Dreams is a national nonprofit citizen's organization that works to bring progressive Americans together to promote progressive visions for America's future. Common Dreams is committed to using the Internet as a political organizing tool, creating new models for Internet activism. The NewsCenter offers an eclectic mix of politics, issues and breaking news, with an emphasis on progressive perspectives that are increasingly hard to find in today's media.

HAPPY NEWS

I love today's happy quote for the day from Helen Keller on this upbeat news site. "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us." Happy News is an attempt to balance the disproportionate amount of negative news reported in much of the traditional media. To be fully engaged, fully informed citizens, we need to know both the good and the bad news, not only the scandal of the day on Capitol Hill.

Happy News recruits citizen journalists who go out and interview people for direct quotes, find anecdotes and cover events in their backyards and communities -- news that may not grab the attention of standard media outlets looking for big stories. Citizen journalists are teachers, bus drivers, mothers, fathers, community volunteers, college students and just about anyone who wants to share local stories around the world. More than 200 citizen journalists have reported from over 10 countries, including Croatia, Israel, Trinidad, India and Canada, just to name a few.

However, if you are sick and tired of hearing from people who strive to remain positive in the midst of chaos and turmoil, there's a news site just for you!
