CAMBRIDGE EVENING NEWS (CEN)

Cambridge Newspapers is publisher of the award-winning Cambridge Evening News (CEN), along with various other newspapers, magazines and Web sites. Created as the Cambridge Daily News in 1888, the Evening News has grown from a small local newsletter to a popular daily publication.

In September 2005, CEN reported that Cambridge University had launched a massive global fundraising drive to raise £1billion by 2012. The university, which was £17 million in the red in 2004, told CEN that the money "will seek to secure the excellence of Cambridge in the 21st Century." Four top priorities have been identified: students, staff, "discovery and creativity" and the university's collections and architectural heritage.

Using its 800th anniversary as a springboard, Cambridge wants to raise hundreds of millions of pounds by targeting high profile former students in the same way as wealthy U.S. Ivy League universities. If the pound were valued at a level comparable to the dollar, would the need for philanthropic support be so urgent? This is just a rhetorical question from a Chicago-born globe trekker who has discovered the outstanding value of traveling to South America (where the cost of living is significantly lower) over countries in the United Kingdom and in Europe.

NEW ZEALAND HERALD

Established in 1863, The New Zealand Herald is New Zealand's highest circulating daily paper and is published six days per week. Over half a million people read the Herald every publication day, with more than 348,000 daily visitors to the Herald's Web site. The New Zealand Herald's core distribution area is the Northern region, including Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. Americans with dollars in their wallets trekking to New Zealand will receive an outstanding value that exceeds the high cost of traveling to Europe and the U.K.
