Internet Prospector

NEWS ONLINE

Back in the day, I was introduced to Internet Prospector via e-mail, which is how we worked together then and now. I submitted nuggets on International Web sites and the rest is history.

For the current issue, this Internet Prospector news hound takes a look back at some of the news sites reviewed in 1995 that survived to serve us today.

CONTENTS:

EUROPEAN BROADCASTING

The European Broadcasting directory organized by Nikos Markovits and arranged by country (formerly http://www.algonet.se/~nikos/broadeuro.html) has added satellite and other broadcasting and directory resources at

DAILY NEWS

The Daily News gopher site (gopher:una.hh.lib.umich.edu/inetdirsstacks/news:sternberg) has fallen in the face of progress. I include it not for nostalgia but to recognize the early contributions to the Internet by students, staff and faculty at our libraries and universities.

A significant change in the Internet is demonstrated here. The once free and open access to Internet resources is now limited to users covered under fee-based contracts. Researchers can search the wonderful resources at the University of Michigan library at

VOICE OF AMERICA (VOA)

The Voice of America, once a government-hosted gopher site, can be heard loud and clear via the Web. It still boasts a robust Web site with the news in 44 languages -- both in audio format and text only versions.

ISRAEL'S DAILY PRESS AND BROADCAST SERVICES

In 1995, we reviewed another government-sponsored (Israel) gopher site (gopher: israel-info.gov.il) containing archives and current news. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to provide daily news at

COLORADO ALLIANCE OF RESEARCH LIBRARIES (CARL)

The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries is another survivor (telnet: pac.carl.org). Its resources grew rapidly and it was a favorite resource of many researchers.

Currently, it offers The Colorado Unified Catalog search access at
