INFOJUNKIE

InfoJunkie touts its site as "The Internet News Navigator." Drop by the page for the latest on general News, Technology, Business, Entertainment and Sports. Click on the "more" link under each subject heading and you will be greeted by the latest headlines organized by time, date and source.

Three to four days of news is available on the page, which has hot links to each story. A great feature is the search dialog box smack dab in the middle (and top) of the home page.

One downside is the lack of a link to a source list. The majority of the news seems to come from CNN, MSNBC, ABC News and InfoWorld, internetnews.com, E-Online, Ain't It Cool News and CNN/SI.

NEWSWISE: SEARCH TOOLS FOR REPORTERS

Roger Johnson, Ph.D., a biochemist turned science writer and freelance reporter in the Washington, DC area in 1978, started Newswise in 1991. He moved it to the Web in 1996.

He clearly explains his plan for the site:

The vision for Newswise is to create a comprehensive, online database of knowledge- based news. This is currently done with scientific, medical, liberal arts and business research. Newswise plans to expand into several other sectors shortly.

Here are some site statistics: 164 universities, 40 colleges, 127 nonprofits and 44 PR agencies participate. Newswise is a little weak in the company news (only 14) and government (only 9) areas.

Each database provides articles on research, policy news, higher education events and community speakers. There are directories of journalism awards, grants and fellowships. Features just for reporters include an "expert finder" and access to embargoed news releases. PressPass and ExpertQuery are other features strictly for reporters who are registered with the site.

The Newswise Contact Directory is searchable by institution name, type of institution, state or category of expertise and hotlinks to the institutional experts. For researchers looking for awards and grants in the area of the sciences, this is a must bookmark page.

NEWSTROVE.COM

Search the news or the Web at NewsTrove.com. Dive into more than 1,000 topics under the subject headings War on Terror, Business, Entertainment, Digital Convergence, Investments, Transportation, Sports, Computing, Companies, Personalities, Politics, Science, Health Care, World, Literature, World Cities, Lord of the Rings (gotta have some fun), Society, Religion, History and Miscellaneous.

Keep your hand on the mouse wheel because you will do a lot of scrolling, scrolling and more scrolling, unless you use the Find function in your Web browser. After the HUGE list of topics, find a long list of news resources and hotlinks to Stocks, Weather, Traffic, Sports, Showtimes, TV, PhoneBook, Maps, Dictionary, Books and Auctions.

The search results can be long like the index page. The results include links to more resources on your topic of choice via SearchCentralStation.com. Some of SearchCentralStation.com's results raised an eyebrow but overall, the query brought accurate results.
