MediaNews Group Interactive (MNGi) has increased its services to its news sites on the Web. Currently it maintains 74 Web sites, including its own 49 dailies, portals and more. All this falls under its umbrella site, News Choice. Select a paper and put in your query. It is just that simple. If you haven't tried Lycos News, maybe it is time to take a look or take another look. Lycos provides Breaking News from Reuters and the AP, Latest Photos, Tech Reports from Wired News, links to Local Newspapers and the List of All Newspapers. Find a paper by entering a city, state and zip code. There are images of breaking news, updates from Reuters wire service, market quotes and an index by topic. The page layout, although filled to the edges with news and information, is clear and easy to use. The capability to search for a local paper is very helpful.
Having grown up watching the news each evening with my father, this is a fascinating site to me and a useful one as a researcher. The staff at Vanderbilt aptly describes the archives content. "The Television News Archive collection at Vanderbilt University is the world's most extensive and complete archive of television news. The collection holds more than 30,000 individual network evening news broadcasts and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming including Nightlines since 1989. These special reports and periodic news broadcasts cover presidential press conferences and political campaign coverage and national and international events such as the Watergate hearings, the plight of American hostages in Iran and the Persian Gulf war." Vanderbilt put the abstracts of these programs online. Browse or search the archives by date, as far back as August 5, 1968. The results are ranked by the frequency and prominence of your search term. http://tvnews.vanderbilt.edu/eveningnews.html http://tvnews.vanderbilt.edu/special.html
