CONTENTS: Since the Internet Prospector's Special on All Things Irish, the Irish Times has had a complete make-over. In March 1999, it had a face lift and a name change to ireland.com. This site is certainly not a newbie in the online news world. In 1994, the Irish Times was the first newspaper in Britain and Ireland and among the first 30 in the world to publish on the Web. It appeared as a series of simple text pages until graphics and pictures were introduced in 1996. For up-to-the-minute news, click on a headline (indexed in reverse chronological order) to read a breaking story right from the home page. Turn to Breaking News to find the latest news organized by Top, Irish, World, Business, Technology and Sports News. Use the drop-down menu at the top right to select a section of the paper. Click on Today for an index, which includes a link to the News in Focus Archives, as well as the search engine. The search engine is very flexible. Limit your search by date (day, month, year from 1998 to 2002), keyword, section of the paper and number. Sort chronologically in ascending or descending date order. Use Boolean operators AND, OR, NEAR (caps not required). An asterisk can be used to find words with the same prefix or root. For example, KEY* will find key, keying, and other variations of the word key. Irish News Internet Services (INIS) lays claim to being the first electronic newspaper for Northern Ireland, publishing its first Web edition in October 1995. In December of that year, during Bill Clinton's historic visit to Ireland, the President's Belfast City Hall address was broadcast in real time over the Irish News' site. Click on the headings on the left of the page or use the drop-down menu to select a section of the paper. Warning, don't click on the PDF edition or you will be stuck on the registration page, unless you want to order the corporate or personal edition for a fee. INIS offers an e-mail edition, too. From INIS, hotlink to Ireland2Go for the Irish News Internet Directory. The site has 16 categories, many with sub-categories, all organized in alphabetical order. If you can't find what you need quickly, search using key words or a phrase. The News and Media section has over eighty entries. For news related to Hibernia, this site is certainly bookmark-worthy.
