| CONTENTS: Researchers may be familiar with some of VNU Business Publications in print -- Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adweek/index.jsp) and Brandweek (http://www.brandweek.com/brandweek/index.jsp). VNU's eMedia branch brings us these publications and others to the online marketplace. This month, News Online takes a look at some essential entertainment and media industry news and information sources, all from VNU. Do note that some of the goodies on these sites are fee-based access only. From digital TV, the FCC, executive changes, media studies programs and who owns a stake in which company, Mediaweek.com covers the issues and provides analysis on the media. This online version of Mediaweek Magazine keeps us informed with breaking news and industry-savvy columnists. Select Daily Briefing from the menu on the left to review news from the past week. Click on Programming Insider for the daily market ratings and more (like a daily TV quiz). Media Pix is another name for the executive change section of newspapers. Current Issue is a teaser for the hard copy or online version of the magazine, which could provide a useful heads-up on when to go to the library for that important article on a new prospect for your media studies program. Newspaper National Network sponsors the 50 market profiles -- a great resource for that media-related proposal. Just click on the article title and then select your city for its profile. There is more at this site, but I will let you explore it on your own. Backstage.com touts itself as The Complete Online Performing Arts Resource. And that it seems to be. Click on Today's News and you will be welcomed by BackStage.com Highlights. Scroll down the page for news selections from the East and from the West. While other regions are featured, (like Chicago, Florida and Las Vegas), alas, they have no region-oriented news. Columnists (click on Columns on the menu on the left of the page) give
their unique views on the industry. Features have choice selections like
the AFTRA article on its members' earnings, which it breaks out into regions
with average salary ranges and percent of total membership While not News related, the site has many resources helpful to the theatre arts. For example, the Artist's Toolbox addresses issues like film funding and writer funding. The Broadway Cash register tallies the gross receipts for top current shows. And, there are listings of agents and managers on each coast. http://www.backstage.com/backstage/news/index.jsp The Hollywood Reporter is all news on the industry.
