TIME WARNER'S DIGITAL MAKEOVER

Pathfinder is rumored to be closing its doors once Time Warner's news and information hub opens shop.

The plan to integrate digital media into all aspects of its business was announced last April. Chairman and CEO, Jerry Levin, further delineated its Web strategy in a December 14, 1999 press release. The key is to re-fit its Web presence into multiple theme-specific hubs, starting with Entertaindom.

Next to come under the knife will be the news and information hub (that is a pathfinder makeover).

Banking on its recognizable brand names like CNN, Time Money, Fortune, Sports Illustrated (in digital and print forms), as well as its TV presence, Time Warner hopes to capture more of the Internet audience as it previews its newest hub.

While we wait for the much needed upgrade of the old pathfinder site (which is in the making as we write this review), we can search for our favorite Warner cartoons and other pleasures at entertaindom.com and still find a"Fortune" in research at the pathfinder site.

As to the effectiveness of the new Web strategy Time Warner is implementing, Web traffic patterns will soon tell the tale.

NONPROFIT ONLINE NEWS' DEEP NEWS SEARCH

Nonprofit Online News from the Gilbert Center is offering a new service called the "Deep News Search."

The "Deep News Search" is the first in a series of new specialized search tools it will be adding to its site.

Drawing from its archive of over 2,000 Web pages, it pledges to dig right into the original Web version of the news source rather than the news summary.

The first new search tool seems promising, so we all may need to keep on eye on the next new benefit from this site.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

While mining the World Wide Web shaft, I uncovered a few searchable international gems, just to keep the news holdings diversified.


PA NEWSCENTRE PA NewsCentre has a search tool called StoryFinder that queries over 100 UK news and information Web sites. It also offers a radio button that promises to uncover related stories for you.

For UK information, the PA NewsCentre contains more nuggetslike audio, video, images and more, in its effort to provide one-stop shopping for UK news and information.

THE IRISH TIMES

Search through every Web issue of The Irish Times on the Web. Use boolean search logic to find your Irish news jewels. Search by date or section, use a wildcard and select a sort order.

After digging through the dusty old archives, go to thehome page, where you can relax, put your feet up and read the current issue of The Irish Times.

Still the newbie in the CNN group, CNN en Español opened its doors in 1997. While providing similar content as its sister site cnn.com (cnn.com), you can hit the hot link to Latin American news and information. Find news, finance, sports, science and technology, audio and more in Spanish. Use the search box at the top or bottom of the page to query the site.

If Spanish isn't your language of choice, select another language from a drop-down menu at the top of the page.
