a second, please, while I turn down the
sound on my computer. I'm listening to country music from Plano, Texas,
while I work on research projects here in the Pacific Northwest. This
month, Internet Prospector concentrates on audio and video
Web sites of interest to researchers.
In the first six months RealNetwork's RealAudio player was available in 1995, 600,000 RA players were downloaded. Over 50 million RealPlayers have been downloaded now, a scant four years later. Pretty heady stuff, eh? Internet Prospector is sure that Web audio and video will open another research door for you. Media sites offer you a new way to learn more about finances and fundraising and to learn about the cultures and the times you are researching. Most important, media files may give you a chance to HEAR and SEE your prospect. Can you imagine that? Media files are beginning to form a Web resource that you will not want to overlook.
If this area of Internet growth is unfamiliar to you, please begin your education with the Tools section this month. While we aren't covering hardware (earphones, sound and videocards, and speakers) you'll need, you'll find plenty of information on software and searching. After you are up to speed on the lingo and the means to media, review the great collection of media resources IP editors bring you in this issue. This is certain to be only our first pass at what is one of the swiftest growing areas of the Internet.
