PHILANTHROPY AND THE THIRD SECTOR IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

We visited this site in 2002, so it's time for a fresh look at this valuable resource. This site, created by the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC), focuses on Australia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Whew. Begin your tour by selecting Philanthropy from the menu below the header on the home page. For each country, links to information caches such as Philanthropy Overview, History of Philanthropy, Policy Environment and Taxation lead visitors to an opportunity to learn about giving in each locale. As you drill down, more categories of information assemble on the menu bar to the right. For example, as you research philanthropy in Japan, new sets of information unfurling are History of the Third Sector, Additional Sources of Information, Education and Research and other giving categories.

For quick access to APPC's collection of grant makers, select Grant Making Foundations from the home page. Use the link to New Developments on the home page to learn about Philanthropy and Law in Asia, New Data on Australia's Nonprofit Sector, Korean Third Sector Research Network and other matters.

GIVING IN EUROPE

The sub-heading for this resource is the "European Cross-Border Giving Database." Researchers exploring international prospects and their philanthropic opportunities might veer toward First Advice to find answers to questions such as "As a donor to whom can I give?" and "What kinds of assets can I give?" among many others. Next, go to the Beneficiaries Across Europe page for links to background information about philanthropy and the nonprofit sector in 16 countries in Europe. Each country page houses links to in-country national databases of foundations and nonprofits. Now we're cooking with gas, aren't we? But wait. Don't miss the Transatlantic Giving section. There is also a keyword search feature as well as a quick search feature allowing visitors to select a donor by country, assets by country, or a beneficiary by country. With so much to explore, you'll forge your own path as your projects push you to the information that best helps you know your European donors and potential donors and their philanthropic options.

NONPROFITSCAN

NonprofitsCan is "the public portal for Imagine Canada (formerly the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy)." NonprofitsCan gives visitors access to thousands of articles and other resources about philanthropy in Canada. The home page includes a news ticker of fresh articles about giving and related topics. Use the Special Collections link to review access to periodical and publications indexes, surveys and other materials. The New Acquisitions list in the Resource Guides section will open the door to what the library has added to its collection.
