BIOGRAPHIES FROM HONG KONG TRADE DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL (TDC)

TDC is the Trade Development Council’s marketing arm for Hong Kong-based manufacturers and traders. This site is deep and rich -- you will be surprised at the valuable nuggets you find here. I will give you a few examples and then leave it to you to find the rest. Let’s begin with a researcher’s dream, pages full of biographies. Scroll to the bottom of the home page and choose Yellow Pages & Business Tools. There you will find a small Who’s Who, linking us to biographies of Chinese business and political leaders (including the schools they attended).

But wait: You are initially looking at the Hong Kong biographies; click on China Mainland, Other Asia or Rest of World on the left side of the screen to access links to biographies for individuals in other locales and to find biography aggregators like China Online’s Business Biographies and the Hope diamond of Chinese biographical resources, University of Heidelberg’s Institute of Chinese Studies’ Chinese Biographies database.

In that same section, Yellow Pages & Business Tools, review the calculators, dictionaries and other tools that might help you in your work before you dive into the White & Yellow Pages collection. Oh yes, we get the white pages here, too. Happy now? Once again, you begin by viewing white and yellow page links for Hong Kong, then Mainland China, then Other Asia and, last, for Rest of World from the menu buttons on the left side of your screen. Just try to think of a telephone directory that isn’t listed here. Hong Kong Phone Book . . . ChinaPages . . . Delhi Telephone Directory . . . Australia City Search...

From the home page TDC has a whole-site search feature, topical search categories (Intellectual Property, International Markets), a right-side menu with links to stock quotes, exchange rates, a free newsletter and far too many resources to list here.

CHINA BUSINESS WINDOW: CHINESE COMPANIES

One of the fastest growing places on the planet for private enterprise is China. Here you’ll find links to information about companies organized by province. The profiles are delightful -- each company’s background, manager’s name, contact information, recent news and more may be covered.

China Business Window also offers you its collection of foreign enterprises in China. The list includes members of the American Chambers in China. You can use this list to identify non-Chinese companies that might be interested in supporting your China-centric causes.

CHINA INTERNET INFORMATION CENTER

China.org bills itself as the gateway to news about China. It is an authorized government portal site to information about China, so you enter its domain fully informed about its leaning. You’ll find information about China’s manned space flight, government white papers, whole-country statistics, links to Chinese universities and even Panda facts. There are state leader biographies ranging from president to local government heads and all the Communist Party of China leaders from the menu bar on the right. Use the menu bar on the left to access People, Business, Sci-Tech and other pages. I naturally gravitated to the People section where I discovered that, if I click on a section title (Who’s Who, for example), I get all the stories posted over the last while. I’ll spend some time reviewing "Non-Communist Woman Elected to Prominent Government Position" and "Diplomat’s Rich Life Revealed." Care to join me?
