THE GERMAN FOUNDATION INDEX

You have your translation tools in hand, right? You’ll need those tools now. More than 1,000 German foundations are profiled at this site. The site links you to the foundations’ Web pages and some of those pages have an English component. Many do not. Content varies from the most basic to fully fleshed out details of the history and mission of the foundation you are seeking.

WORLD BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX

As we move around the Internet world, we are forming opinions about databases and their search tools that facilitate access to information in those databases. Here is an interesting one for you to try. The World Biographies database includes entries for secretaries and sheiks, bakers and bankers. The search tool allows you to demarcate your search with name, year and date of birth or death, occupation, or the archive in which the biography appeared. Results returned are strings of text that you “mark” and then retrieve your marked entries in a manner similar to a fee-based Proquest search. That’s easy and familiar.

The results return the individual’s name, date of birth and death, occupation, country, and the archive or publication in which you will find a full citation. The database contains over 3 million citations, so you are sure to find a prospect or two who draws your attention.
