You already know about The Foundation Center's international resources. You know about the list of international foundations at Fundsnet (http://www.fundsnetservices.com/internat.htm) and UK Fundraising (http://www.fundraising.co.uk/grants.html). You may even know about the directories of non-USA foundations at a few other Web sites we've covered in International Prospector. Now let's step back and look at concepts of giving globally.

GLOBAL PHILANTHROPY: THE SYNERGOS INSTITUTE

Researchers are good at delving into a topic and learning all they can. Are you trying to learn about international philanthropy? You might start here. The Synergos Institute's mission is to share information about global giving and to help "strengthen the capacity of foundations in Africa, Asia and Latin America." You'll find interesting articles and case studies here under Knowledge Base and Publications. Go to the Foundation Database link to learn about Latin American foundations. The search engine is surprisingly good, even if the database is small. Be sure to bookmark this one because it is sure to grow.

PHILANTHROPY AND THE THIRD SECTOR IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

The Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium gives us a wonderful resource with this Web site. Choose Philanthropy and then, country by country, learn about the tradition of giving in each locale, tax policies that affect giving and other matters. Choose Regional Organizations and you'll get a chance to review a short but useful list of foundations and the causes they support. Several papers about giving in these sections of the world are housed in the New Developments section of the Web site. You'll also see a spot on the home page where experts in fund raising e-gather to offer their services to one another across the globe. What's that section called? Why it's called Researchers, of course.

WINGS: WORLDWIDE INITIATIVES FOR GRANTMAKER SUPPORT

A good way to be in-the-know is to hang out with people who do know. WINGS is a project that draws 90 membership organizations from around the world together to share information and to "strengthen philanthropy worldwide." Links to current news will draw you into the global view of giving. Consider Philanthropy Australia's plans for a directory of corporate philanthropy or the CIVICUS survey about changes seen by civic nonprofits since the September 11 tragedy. WINGS is hosted by the Council on Foundations and Community Foundations of Canada. The European Foundation Centre will begin hosting the project in 2003. Like all good researchers, you'll start with Resources from the menu bar. There you'll find plenty of links to information about foundation organization, as well as links to a great collection of directories of foundations from all over the globe. There are many other resources here, so set your course to continue to explore. Before you know it, you'll be an expert in international philanthropy and you'll know exactly where to look for grantmakers throughout the world.
