INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR NOT-FOR-PROFIT LAW

Can individuals in Japan get a tax break when they donate to charity? What's happening in China with nonprofit organizations? If questions like these run through your mind, this is the site for you.

The International Centre for Not-for-Profit Law is an advocacy group facilitating the growth of laws that support nonprofit development in countries around the world. That mission leads the organization to track those same laws. The ICNL's journal has relevant articles and is available online. Here's an example of the goldmine you'll find:

In the Country Reports, choose Japan to learn about the tax deduction individuals in that country may take when they make a contribution to a tax-deductible Nonprofit Organization (NPO).

For more articles, find the link to the journal's archives at the ICNL homepage.

NATIONAL INDIAN GAMING ASSOCIATION

The Independence Day fireworks in my hometown were budgeted to cost $100,000. The Puyallup Tribe, already putting on their own spectacular 4th of July light show, donated $50,000 to the cause and became the event sponsor. That sparked my thinking about the tribes as philanthropists. For a brief overview of the regulatory boundaries around casino proceeds, take a look at "The Casino Myth: How Much Do You Really Know" by Richard Williams and appearing in May 15, 2001 issue of Free Indian News at

Next, review the 2001 report on the charitable giving of the Indian Gaming Nations. The survey found that the nations, representing just 14% of the gaming sector, gives $68 million a year to charity. Surprisingly, 38% of the recipients are non-Indian organizations. Can your organization find a new supporter among the tribes?
