The Olympics will be in Australia soon and, lo and behold, Starbucks just opened its first coffee shop down under. Can prospect researchers with a penchant for double talls and track events be far behind? Let's look at some friend- and wealth-finding resources in the land of crocodile hunters and ever-lit torches.
The Australian White Pages offers visitors easy telephone lookups, postal codes, world times and dialing codes at: http://www.whitepages.com.au/ WebWombat is an Australia-based search engine with over 10 million .au pages indexed at: http://www.webwombat.com.au/ The Australian Property Institute links site-seers to in-country real estate Web pages, as well as links to government and other pages (and, bless them, to a few sites where visitors can learn about donating to charity) at: http://www.propertyinstitute.com.au/ Looking for the latest Aussie news? You'll think you turned on the television set in your living room when you go to http://www.news.com.au/.
Could a Web site love researchers more? BRW set up a page that links to all their top lists, clearly noting the date the lists were published. Here you'll find the Power Pack (a good name for the 50 most powerful Australians) from February, Top 50 Entertainers and Fastest Growing 100 (companies) from March, the Top 500 Companies from April, and the Rich 200 from May. Look for the Top 500 Private Companies to be freshened in August and the Top 1000 in late fall. Go directly to BRW's top lists page at Have you been to enough Web pages now to be a judge in the "Annual Best Web Pages for Researchers Contest" (which we ought to initiate)? I have and I'd vote this as one of my favorites in terms of usability as well as content. The AFSD site opens window after window, placing them in reduced size atop the larger window before you, so that you don't have to prowl around, asking yourself, "Now where did I see . . .?" Let's take a busman's tour of this site. Start by choosing Directory from the menu at the top of the page. You'll be dropped into the Australian Stock Exchange-listed companies database. There you'll find links to company homepages or at least ticker symbols and contact information. Since the bones of the homepage remain in view, move your cursor to the right to use the Stock Quotes (including a symbol lookup) feature. Move your cursor to the left to convert Australia Dollars (AUD) and other currencies to anything you like. Later, when you have more time, go back to this site to explore the links to banking, venture capital and other money-related Web sites. For example, choosing Research will pop you over to Wright profiles sorted by country.
