SCOTSMAN.COM

It is difficult to visit many news sources in Europe this month and not meet up with a story or two about the Sunday Times Rich List. The Scotsman is no exception, where news that Sir Tom Hunter is the first Scotsman in history to join the rich list is easy to find. But you might be interested in your news alerts options from the Scotsman. You can sign up for business, obituary and other alerts to drop into your e-mailbox. Be sure to review the handy directory at the bottom of the home page. It gives you a faster way to what you may be seeking. The free registration makes you one of the Scotsman’s members with full access to its online content.

SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE

Welcome to “devolved government.” I bet you are hoping that refers to a government near you. Nope, only if you are reading this from Edinburgh and environs. Scottish Executive is a government Web portal for Scotland. You’ll be reminded of something decidedly warmer and fuzzier (well, or more corporate) than most government sites you visit. By selecting Agencies from the menu, you can link to many of the sites a researcher needs, such as the Registers of Scotland, the land and property directory. Be sure to check out Topic, the collection of articles and links about everything from Agriculture to Transport.

SCOTTISH COUNCIL FOR VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) oversees and supports nonprofits. From the menu, select Information and then Top Information (well, that’s why we call it drilling down) to reach good descriptions of the role of a nonprofit and its leadership in Scotland. Stick with the Information category and now choose Voluntary Sector Database. From this page you can search voluntary organizations and charities operating in Scotland. The information returned will include organization name, address, Web site, scope (geography), field of work and chief officers. Sometimes this might be enough to send a researcher down a fresh path toward one of her prospect’s affiliations.
