      IS YOUR MINER'S LAMP ON?

When print directories were our primary resources, we could rely on publishers to inundate us with information about their latest products. The Internet doesn't work that way. No one -- well, except Internet Prospector -- is setting Web site resources perfect for development researchers in front of us on a regular basis. Our adaptable natures have driven us to review other sources reporting on resources. While most that these other sources report isn't useful to prospect researchers, every once in a while there is a golden nugget amid the gray rocks. Here are a few I found recently -- and the location of the mine entrances.

      IPO TOKYO

A search site many of us use offers us the chance to sign up for e-newsletters about Internet activities in other regions of the world. Choose International at Internet.com ( http://www.internet.com/sections/international.html), and then select International Newsletters to sign up for a steady flow of Web news into your e-mail box. A recent story in one of the newsletters, Asia News, reported on IPO Tokyo, a new Web site offering visitors the chance to explore initial public offerings in another part of the world. Yes, they IPO elsewhere, too. According to Asia News, IPO Tokyo is unique in offering an English version. In addition to links to the Japanese and other stock exchanges, IPO Tokyo provides profiles of pre- and post-IPO companies.

TRANSLATING HELP ON THE TOOL BAR

I hope that ResearchBuzz is not news to you. The wonderful Tara Calishain puts out this e-newsletter about searching and useful Web sites, and you can subscribe to it at http://www.researchbuzz.com/news/. Tara introduced readers to a great tool located at WordReference.com in a recent issue. WordReference.com's Michael Kellogg set up Collins translation dictionaries so that you can have them on your browser tool bar. The setup process is easier than you can imagine: just follow Michael's directions to drag the icon to your tool bar and, the next thing you know, you are translating single words in Web pages with a couple of clicks. I am crazy about this tool. I am crazy about it for the help it gives us today and for what it forebodes. Right now Michael only has French-to-English and Spanish-to-English to help us out in the direction we are generally going (something-to-English), but he promises to add more languages soon. He also plans to change the icon from =>English to something more telling, like =>Ingles and =>Anglais. If Michael hasn't gotten to this fix before you get to his site, just open your bookmarks to Edit Bookmarks and you can change the name of the icons on the toolbar yourself.

WWW VIRTUAL LIBRARY: INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS RESOURCES

Sometimes Web site builders write to Internet Prospector to let us know about their page. If you knew about this resource before, be sure to update your bookmark with its new address. Elizabethtown College Professor Wayne Selcher has created a wonderful resource of international links and his organizational style fits our work to a tee. He has news links -- including live radio and television links -- and by organization, by country or region and by topic links. There is a lot to explore here -- over 1,700 links according to Professor Selcher's last count -- so you've increased your chances of finding what you need with a stop at this site.
