RESESARCH
BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND
Internet Prospector, July '96
Basic research in biomedical sciences characterizes BWF. This
Fund is the darling of junior and senior scientists who pursue
funding for institutional development or individual research. They
support a broad variety of programs such as:
Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
Internet Prospector, July '95
The annual compendium of information on Federal grant
programs, searchable by keywords (if you can find the right
one.)

COMMUNITY OF SCIENCE WEB SERVER
Internet Prospector, February '96
This server is designed to help scientists locate funding.
The fun thing for development researchers is a list of the
institutions with up to $1 million in NSF (National Science
Foundation) grants, over 3,000 in all, linked to this site.
Look for your institution here! Search also for federally-sponsored Canadian agricultural research.
Science Web
A DIRECTORY OF FUNDING AGENCIES
Internet Prospector, September '95
This is the University of
Virginia's Department of Computer Science directory for science
and technology researchers. Web sites for government
sources, links to searchable databases for the Federal
Information Exchange and others as well as a state
and federal grants link indexed by category are included.
Web sites for several foundations and other web sites
and gopher sites of interest to the science and engineering
community are also located here.

GLENN FOUNDATION FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH
Internet Prospector, September '96
Normally, the Internet Prospector covers those foundations
that accept grant proposals from organizations; however,
for consistency's sake, IP is including the Glenn Foundation
for Medical Research. Why? Just so you'll know this particular
philanthropy doesn't solicit or accept charitable
contributions. These folks are interested in extending
"the healthy and productive years of life through research
on the mechanisms of biological aging." Those organizations
with an interest in the biology of aging might find their
website interesting reading. Visit them at:

THE HEREDITARY DISEASE FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector, August '96
The Hereditary Disease Foundation focuses primarily on Huntington's
Disease, a fatal and incurable neurological disorder that afflicts 10 out
of every 100,000 people. The Foundation was responsible for
spearheading landmark research that identified the genetic marker for
Huntington's. Because the disease has no cure as yet, the Hereditary
Disease Foundation continues its work via supporting research grants,
awards and workshops. They also have a postdoctoral fellowship--a
posthumous tribute to John J. Wasmuth, the University of California,
Irvine geneticist whose scientific contributions helped Huntington's
Disease Collaborative Research Group find the deadly and elusive gene.

RICE UNIVERSITY
Internet Prospector, December '94
The gopher server at Rice University is a great resource for all
types of information, but included within the server is grant
information as well. The dominant themes are scientific, medical,
technical and research-based grants, but there are some education-
based resources as well, which even include some Canadian grant
information.
TECHNICAL ASSOC. OF THE PULP & PAPER INDUSTRY
(TAPPI) FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector, August '96
Judging by past grantees, the TAPPI Foundation should interest those
universities with experts in forestry, paper manufacturing and
engineering, and, of course, plant biology. According to TAPPI:
The Foundation has awarded over a million dollars in research grants to scientists and engineers for "seed" money to initiate research in areas related to the industry. The Foundation research program seeks to reach beyond the industry's present research and academic bounds, and one important element is that the grants are intended to be used as leverage for major funding by other interested parties.
The Foundation promotes its interests via the aforementioned research
grants and "prestige" awards, namely the Gunnar Nicholson Gold
Medalist Award for technical contributions and the Herman Joachim
Distinguished Service Award.
