THE DR. ROBERT C. ATKINS FOUNDATION

In 1999, Dr. Robert C. Atkins and his wife, Veronica, established The Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation, Inc. (RCAF). After her husband's death in April 2003, Mrs. Atkins transformed the RCAF into a supporting organization of the National Philanthropic Trust (NPT), an independent public charity in Jenkintown, PA. Under the terms of Dr. Atkins' will, a substantial percentage of his bequest goes to the RCAF.

Mrs. Atkins serves as chair of the board of the RCAF which awards grants to study the safety and efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets. To date, the fund has given away $1.5 million in new grants. Among them: $200,000 for a research project examining the impact of the Atkins diet on obese diabetics.

  1. support for organizations engaged in disease prevention and treatment, patient education, health policy dialogue and advocacy on behalf of those with serious medical needs;
  2. support for improving student access to quality educational resources and learning opportunities, especially in the sciences, in communities where the company has a presence;
  3. support for organizations in communities near Chiron that are working for positive social change and providing health and human services to those in need, particularly at-risk children and youth.

Requests for support are accepted throughout the year, and grants are made on a quarterly basis.
