CRANBROOK PEACE FOUNDATION (CPF)

The Cranbrook Peace Foundation in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, solicits contributions in order to make grants to organizations and projects working to promote peacemaking and to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution. CPF seeks organizations, primarily in Southeast Michigan, that require operating funds for specific unbudgeted projects that will yield tangible and enduring results. The upper limit of grant support is $5,000 for projects to expand the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. as it relates to peacemaking. The CPF Web site links are a great source of information on international and national organizations working for peace. CPF also sponsors an annual lecture, presents an annual peace award and distributes a regular newsletter.

NATIONAL PEACE FOUNDATION (NPF)

With headquarters in Washington, D.C., the National Peace Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2002. The NPF is one of the principal education and practice organizations concerned with conflict resolution and peace-building, growing out of a national grassroots movement to establish an official peace academy for the United States. NPF directors, advisors and partners support the development of a climate of understanding that the United States has many options besides using its military capacity in international conflict. The organization promotes international peace and resolution of conflicts among nations without recourse to violence.

In recent years, the NPF has received support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Eurasia Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Compton Foundation, Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Laub Foundation and the Rockefeller Family and Associates, among other generous friends of peace-building. The NPF Web site features links with programs underway in Africa, Cuba, Russia and the Middle East.

WORLD PEACE FOUNDATION (WPF)

The World Peace Foundation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was created in 1910 to encourage international peace and cooperation. The WPF seeks to advance the cause of peace through study, analysis and the advocacy of wise action. As an operating foundation, the WPF provides financial support only for projects that it has initiated on its own. Completed projects range from "Creating Peace in Sri Lanka" to "Sudan: A Way Forward."

Current projects are underway, for example, in Cyprus and Puerto Rico, and focus on peace enforcement and conflict prevention. Biographies of the WPF 2002 - 2003 Fellows give us a glimpse into the graduate school background of individuals who will likely be featured in a 2030 Who's Who in International Affairs. The WPF Web site provides links to the reports of the projects it has funded, but it is limited in its links to related organizations, nationally and globally.
