Strategic partnerships are the name of the game these days for foundations. While charity still begins at home for some of us, the giving horizon for others has expanded from the local to the national and to the international levels. This month we take a look at several foundations that have formed strategic partnerships designed to reach a more global audience of generous givers. The Maclellan Foundation serves strategic international and national organizations committed to "furthering the Kingdom of Christ" and selects local organizations that foster the spiritual welfare of the community. Established in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1952, the Maclellan Foundation currently supports more than 200 ministries and charitable organizations each year. In 2000, the Maclellan Foundation launched Generous Giving to stir a renewed commitment to stewardship among Christians. Generous Giving is an educational stewardship ministry that seeks to encourage givers of all income levels -- as well as encouraging ministry leaders, teachers and professional advisors -- to fully understand and embrace what it means to live generously. GenerousGiving.org is a tremendous resource for anyone engaged in stewardship and development work for parishes of all faiths. http://www.generousgiving.org/ Stewardship partners include Crown Financial Ministries and the National Christian Foundation.
The NCCF was created in May 1997 to address the needs of persons and organizations who seek to engage in philanthropic activities that support the ministries of the Catholic Church, but do not have the ability to organize a traditional private foundation. With headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland and a track record of making grants in the East and Northeast, NCCF has more than $3 million in total assets under management in more than 20 funds and charitable remainder trusts combined and has made approximately $800,000 of grant disbursements nationally and internationally. The idea for the NCCF originated at the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, one of the largest private Catholic foundations in the country. In addition to individuals, several prominent organizations and religious orders from across the nation have given funds to NCCF to provide startup costs. http://www.nccfcommunity.org/
Thanks to Peter Walkenhorst and Karim Chatti of the Bertelsmann Foundation for this heads-up. In September 2002, the Bertelsmann Foundation of Gutersloh, Germany and the C.S. Mott Foundation of Flint, Michigan, agreed to invest 1 million euros over the next three years to facilitate the exchange of experience among community foundations from Europe, North America and Mexico. Both foundations agreed to support the Transatlantic Community Foundation Network, which was established in 1999, for another three-year period. The TCFN Philanthropy and Foundations team identifies good practice, develops tools and concepts and shares them with emerging and existing community foundations. The biographical profiles of Bertelsmann Foundation board members also provide helpful background for "newbies" to international research. http://www.tcfn.efc.be/
