K-12: School Grant Sources
SchoolGrants:
SchoolGrants was created to help fill the needs of the K-12 education
community in locating and applying for grants so that some of the dream
projects of the teachers in the U.S. can be realized. Sharing successful
proposals and other tips and information with your colleagues is an excellent
way to help all children across the United States.
Donna Fernandez, the "organization" behind the creation and maintenance
of SchoolGrants, recognized the need for those interested in K-12 education
to have a convenient place to collaborate and share. In May 2000, Ms.
Fernandez began the listserv, Bring Home the Bacon, to facilitate discussions
with other educators and interested community members. SchoolGrants also
posts grant opportunities of benefit to K-12 schools, educators and students
throughout the U.S.

K-12: Funding Opportunities
Grants for Community Technology Centers:
Sponsored by the Department of Education (ED), these grants establish
or expand community technology centers in economically distressed urban
and rural areas. The centers are intended to provide access to technology
and promote the use of technology among all populations in underserved
areas, and often they are located in K-12 school districts.
Local education agencies, consortia of nonprofit groups, and state education
agencies are eligible to apply for the grants. ED estimates that 80 to
100 awards will be given in this cycle, averaging $200,000 to $250,000
each.

Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching:
Sponsored by the Golden Apple Foundation, these grants recognize outstanding
Illinois teachers for their contributions to society. Winners receive
a paid, fall-term sabbatical at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
Winners may take as many courses as they wish in any subjects they choose.
Awardees also receive a $2,500 stipend and an Apple computer system.
Nominated teachers must teach full-time at a public or nonpublic school
in Cook, Lake or DuPage Counties. For the 2001-2002 school year, teachers
must spend the majority of their assignment time teaching one or more
of grades six through eight. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this award,
but a teacher cannot nominate himself or herself. Deadline: December 1,
2001.

Random Acts of Kindness Foundation Contest:
The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is sponsoring a teachers lesson
plan contest. The foundation supports the global Kindness Movement by
encouraging and assisting individuals and groups who wish to perform kind
acts. To help fulfill its mission, the foundation collects lesson plans
and makes them available to others interested in promoting Kindness in
their schools.
To honor the efforts of these teachers, the foundation will award $500
each to the teachers who submit the ten best Random Acts of Kindness lesson
plans. Teachers (or past/retired teachers) involved in Kindness projects
and/or activities in their classrooms are eligible to participate. Deadline:
December 31, 2001.

Teaching Tolerance Program:
This program is a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center that offers
grants of up to $2,000 to K-12 classroom teachers for implementing tolerance
projects in their schools and communities. Proposals from other educators
such as community organizations and churches will be considered on the
basis of direct student impact. There are no deadlines for proposals,
but allow for a 10 to 12-week processing time when planning for your project.
