GOOD SAMARITAN FOUNDATION

The Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) is a philanthropic organization in Washington, D.C., founded in 1992 by four former Washington Redskins: Art Monk, Tim Johnson, Charles Mann and Earnest Byner. The mission of the Good Samaritan Foundation is based on the strong commitment of its founders to "Prepare Youth for Leadership in the Community and the Workplace." This mission is achieved through the Student Training Opportunity Program (STOP), which provides inner-city youth with the environment needed to equip them with the skills, training and resources necessary to compete successfully in society. STOP is a year-long program, serving more than 50 high school students, four days a week during the school year and five days a week during the summer.

SAVE A LIFE FOUNDATION (SALF)

SALF is a non-profit organization founded in Illinois in 1993 by Carol Spizzirri in response to the 1992 death of her daughter Christina. Christina was involved in a hit-and-run car accident, suffering serious injuries to her arm. The first people on the scene were local police officers who made the fatal decision to wait for the emergency medical service, instead of rendering basic first aid. Despite her injuries, Christina may have survived had care been given immediately, but instead, bled to death before professional help arrived. Later Mrs. Spizzirri learned that firefighters, 9-1-1 dispatchers, school teachers, coaches and other public servants were not required to know basic life saving skills.

SALF is dedicated to educating the public to not fear being sued, because the “Good Samaritan Law” covers those who render aid in good faith. In its first year, SALF was instrumental in the successful passage of an Illinois mandate requiring police and firefighters to be trained in life support skills prior to graduating from their academies, and in passage of a federal appropriation bill to help pay for that training.
