CENTURY FOUNDATION

Founded in 1919 and formerly known as the Twentieth Century Fund, Inc., the Century Foundation's mission is to influence those who care about issues such as economic inequality, population aging and the public's discontent with government and politics. The Century Foundation sponsors and supervises research on significant economic, social and political issues. Also, it maintains eight Web sites, which promote public debate. For instance, the strengths and weaknesses of the National Strategy for Homeland Security are analyzed and the results are available online.

MARKLE FOUNDATION

The Markle Foundation has evolved into a leader in applying emerging communications media and information technology to improving the quality of our lives. A private not-for-profit organization, the Foundation has $200 million in assets. Established in 1927, Markle began focusing on communications media in 1969. A new initiative of the foundation, partially in response to 9/11, is the launching of the Task Force on National Security in the Information Age, co-chaired by Markle Foundation President Zoe Baird and former Netscape Communications Chairman James Barksdale.
