CONTENTS: A community foundation established in 1929, DF makes grants to organizations and agencies located in the city and county of Dallas, Texas. Grants are principally for capital purposes. DF fields of interest include African Americans, aging, the arts, crime/violence prevention, child abuse, the disabled and economically disadvantaged, education, health care, health organizations and human services. The SGKBCF is a public charity established in 1982 in Texas by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who lost her fight against breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation has become a trusted source of breast health and breast cancer information all over the world. It supports breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, and seeks to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Since 1982, SGKBCF has awarded more than 450 grants totaling nearly $60 million for breast cancer research and outreach projects.
The MFI is an independent foundation incorporated in 1948 by Algur H. and Virginia Meadows to benefit the people of Texas. Al Meadows was responsible for building the General American Oil Company of Texas into a successful independent oil and gas production company. MFI supports the arts, social services, community and rural development, health and mental health care, education, and civic and cultural programs. MFI also operates a historic preservation investment-related program using a cluster of Victorian homes as offices for nonprofit agencies.
