The Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to strengthen Christian congregations by providing an opportunity for pastors to apply for and receive grants for sabbaticals from the Endowment’s National Clergy Renewal Program. A grant will fund all costs related to approved sabbatical renewal programs, including the costs of a replacement to handle ministry during the cleric’s absence. In the 2004 National Clergy Renewal Program, the Endowment anticipates awarding as many as 120 grants of up to $45,000 each directly to Christian congregations for the support of renewal programs for their pastors. Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program. Deadline for submission of proposals is June 25, 2004. Notification of grant awards will be made by October 2004.
The Piper Trust was established in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1995 by Virginia G. Piper, whose first husband, Paul V. Galvin, founded Motorola. Mrs. Piper, who lived in Paradise Valley, Arizona, for nearly three decades, was the sole administrator of the trust until her death in June 1999. Upon her death, the trust received more than $500 million from her estate and significantly expanded its operations. Grant making is limited to organizations that serve residents of Maricopa County, Arizona. The trust has identified four "initiative areas" -- early childhood, youth, the elderly and arts and culture -- for its initial years of grant making. In addition, the trust pperiodically considers solicited proposals in other areas. The Piper Fellows Program, for instance, provides paid sabbaticals to outstanding nonprofit executives working at arts, education, health, human services and religious groups in Maricopa County.

The Smith Reynolds Foundation offers up to five sabbaticals annually to individuals in paid, full-time leadership positions who have served a North Carolina nonprofit organization for at least three years, of which two were spent in leadership.
