CONTENTS: AIF was founded in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Gujarat, India, in January of 2001, by leading Indian-American business and community leaders under the Leadership of former President Bill Clinton. Its mission is to accelerate social and economic change in India. AIF focuses its grants primarily on livelihood and education, along with rehabilitation, health and human services. AIF also runs two major programs in India -- Service Corps and Digital Equalizer. AIF is a secular and non-partisan organization with offices in New York, California and India.
A public charity established in 1984 in Washington, D.C., USIP aims to strengthen the nation's capacity to promote the peaceful resolution of international conflict. Through its two principle grantmaking components -- unsolicited grants and solicited grants -- the institute offers financial support for research, education, training and the dissemination of information on international peace and conflict resolution. Unsolicited grants are provided for any topics that fall within the institute's broad mandate. USIP also sponsors Peace Essay Prizes for high school students in grades nine through twelve.
A new foundation founded in 2002, the HRF is an international organization dedicated to advocating for, educating and counseling disabled veterans living in areas of conflict throughout the world. The organization also provides free prosthetic and orthotic devices to military veterans. The HRF was created after the death of Harold Russell, an instructor and demolitions expert during World War II, who lost both hands while demonstrating how to assemble explosives. Russell won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance as an amputee soldier adjusting to civilian life after the war in the 1946 movie The Best Years of Our Lives.
