Special thanks to Cecilia Hogan for writing the Foundation and Grants
column while I took a four-month techie sabbatical from reporting duties.
In any case, on the first month back, I get lucky and hit the mother lode
of foundation links. Read on.
The Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts is a regional association of grantmakers with quite an extensive listing of its membership. Send your mouse to: http://www.agmconnect.org/agmwebmanager.nsf/hf/AboutAGM Click on the "Member List and Websites" link for a listing of both private and corporate foundations with a presence in Massachusetts. Some of the foundations have been covered in previous IP's; however, three new items are listed below.
Strengthening families and improving the quality of life are the main interests of the Nord Family Foundation. Most grants are made to organizations within Lorain County, Ohio, but the foundation also gives in Cuyahoga County, Ohio; in Columbia, South Carolina; Boston and Denver. It gives very selectively to national organizations. Nord primarily supports programs in the areas of: arts and culture, civic affairs, education and health and social services. Annual reports, program guidelines and application forms are available in .pdf format on the Web site.
Frank Stanley Beveridge, founder of Stanley Home Products, established this foundation in 1947. Today the foundation supports a broad variety of causes, ranging from arts and culture to youth development. It also supports annual and capital campaigns, bricks and mortar, and provides seed money (among other things) that many other philanthropies will not touch. Geographic emphasis is on highly specific regions in California, Florida, Hawaii and Massachusetts, as well as the states of New Hampshire and Rhode Island. One of the most interesting features of the Web site is the section, "Determining your Eligibility." Basically, it's a form-based questionnaire that determines whether or not you meet their program guidelines. Visit the site and take the quiz yourself.
Giving support to organizations and programs in Boston and New York, the Charles Hayden Foundation focuses on youth. Specific interests include the moral, mental and physical development of young people, ages 3-21. The foundation favors early intervention programs that provide long-term, intensive support to youth. Current concerns are: providing services to economically disadvantaged youth, strengthening pre-school to K-12 educational programs and educational enrichment outside of schools. For details, visit:
