Greetings from Rio. After having spent my first Carnaval celebration in the charming colonial town of Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, I wanted to share more of the foundation resources I have discovered since coming to Brasil. (Before you send letters -- we're going with David's Portuguese spelling of some words.)

GIFE

GIFE (Group of Institutes, Foundations and Enterprises) is a consortium of Brazilian grantmakers that fund or operate numerous projects of public interest. Their emphasis is on capacity-building and strengthening organizations to help achieve their missions. Based in Sao Paulo, GIFE sponsors a wide variety of conferences and workshops, maintains a well-equipped resource center and is a leader in third sector philanthropy throughout South America. PRO MUNDO

Similarly constituted as Dreams Can Be Foundation, Pro Mundo is a bi-national U.S. nonprofit organization and Brazilian NGO that promotes gender equity in communities throughout Brasil. It sponsors numerous programs in the areas of public health, human rights, AIDS prevention and social development. Pro Mundo can be read in English, Spanish and Portuguese; black bar, top right.

COAV

The main objectives of the COAV (Children and Youth Organised in Armed Violence) Project are to identify cases where children and youth are involved in armed groups in countries that are not at war, produce and disseminate information on the problem, educate the international community, and share best practices and solutions. For anyone who has seen the widely-acclaimed film, Cidade de Deus (City of God), this site has much information on remediation efforts to reduce gun violence among youth populations around the world.
