Established in 1976, the AIF is a public charity headquartered in Boston. AIF seeks to promote peaceful, charitable and cultural causes in the U.S. and in Ireland, for people of both Irish and non-Irish descent. Although its field of interest is Ireland, the AIF makes grants on a national and international basis, primarily in the form of scholarships to individuals. Founded in New York City in 1981, the AICF fosters international cooperation in cancer research, prevention and early detection. The Foundation awards fellowships to young scientists, provides free mammograms and prostate cancer screenings, and funds international research and conferences. The European Institute of Oncology in Milan, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the Strang Cancer Center of Cornell University have all been participating institutions in the Tamoxifen Study to prevent breast cancer, as well as the 3-D conformal radiotherapy study for treatment of prostate cancer.
Incorporated in 1920 in Delaware for relief in Belgium, the BAEF is a public charity located in New Haven, Conn. Its current purpose is to promote closer relations between Belgium and the U.S. through graduate exchange fellowships in diverse fields and to assist higher education, scientific research and the exchange of intellectual ideas. BAEF awards one-year fellowships for advanced study or research at a Belgian university to U.S. citizens with advanced degrees. Candidates under 30 years of age with speaking and reading knowledge of Dutch, French or German are preferred. Grants carry a $17,000 stipend that includes lodging and living expenses in Belgium for 12 months, as well as round-trip travel expenses. Senior fellowships are also awarded to professors, scientists or scholars from the U.S. Applications are available on the BAEF Web site.
