CONTENTS: The Surdna Foundation was established in 1917 by John Emory Andrus, a philanthropist and businessman. During his lifetime, he was elected mayor of Yonkers, New York, followed by four terms in the U.S. Congress. Andrus also held long-term posts as a trustee of Wesleyan University and as a director of New York Life Insurance Company. The Surdna Foundation provides support for programs that champion biological diversity; human systems, which includes some grants for the arts and for effective citizenship; transportation; and urban/suburban land use and energy use. For more information check out the foundation's Web site at Steve Kirsch, 43, is perhaps best known as the chairman and founder of Infoseek Corporation, a leading Internet navigation service that was acquired by Disney in November 1999. The Steven and Michele Kirsch Foundation's giving reflects the charitable interests and passions of its two founders. The foundation gives to an array of issues and causes, ranging from curing cancer and other major diseases, to cleaning up the air, to supporting Silicon Valley nonprofit organizations. The foundation's assets are worth approximately $50 million. The foundation limits some, but not all, of its giving to California. The foundation's basic endowment, derived from contributions from the Sasakawa Foundation and the Japanese motorboat racing industry, totals some 50 billion yen for FY 1995. SPF's grants are classified under two major categories: Regular Projects and projects of Special Funds. Regular Projects address specific fields of international issues and concerns. The Special Funds projects address questions pertaining to four specific geographic areas of the world Pacific island nations (The Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund), China (The Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund), Central Europe (The Sasakawa Central Europe Fund) and Southeast Asia (The Sasakawa Southeast Asia Cooperation Fund). Funding eligibilities are decided differently under each category. Proposals are accepted either in English or Japanese, though the Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund accepts them also in Chinese.
