CONTENTS: In the May 2, 2002 issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Ian Wilhelm describes the difficulties faced by organizations with names almost identical to the Muslim organizations charged by the federal government with having ties to Islamic terrorists. Here are snapshots of several public charities impacted by the confusion of the 'nonprofit name game.'
The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1999 by an ecumenical group of American Christians in order to preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land. The founders believed that if American Christians were told of the desperate situation of the Christians in the Holy Land, American Christians would reach out to help. HCEF hopes to help Christians remain in the Holy Land by providing financial, moral and spiritual support for Christians in the Holy Land. Project areas focus on employment, education and housing. The Holy Land Foundation is an ecumenical program established by Franciscan monks in 1994 to address the crisis of the ongoing exodus of Christians from the Holy Land. The HLF seeks to create jobs and to provide scholarships and affordable medical services to Palestinian Christians, as well as to preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land. Types of support provided include emergency funds and scholarships to individuals. Giving is limited to Israel, the Middle East and the West Bank/Gaza. http://www.d-holliday.com/holyland/default.htm Holy Land Trust-USA, an Altadena, California foundation, is organized separately from the Middle East offices of HLT. HLT-USA provides support and technical assistance for Holy Land Trust organizations in the Middle East. It conducts educational, fund-raising and needs awareness campaigns on their behalf throughout North America and Europe. HLT operates solely on grants and donations from individuals. In the U.S., projects range from a video of the Journey of the Magi, ongoing Web development, development of interactive bible study materials and ongoing speaking engagements.
