Verizon was created when GTE and Bell Atlantic merged. The foundation was launched on July 3, 2000, (shortly after the merger) to serve the nonprofit community on behalf of Verizon Communications, America's Number One wireline and wireless company. According to the Web site, the new Verizon Foundation will invest $70 million in support of the communities they serve from Hawaii to Maine in 2000, making it one of the top ten largest corporate foundations in the United States. The John Templeton Foundation was established in 1987 by renowned international investor, Sir John Templeton. According to its Web site, the Foundation's purpose is to stimulate excellence in scholarly understanding, which can serve to encourage further worldwide explorations of the moral and spiritual dimensions of the Universe and of the human potential within its ultimate purpose. THE GLADYS KRIEBLE DELMAS FOUNDATION The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation promotes the advancement and perpetuation of humanistic inquiry and artistic creativity by encouraging excellence in scholarship and in the performing arts, and by supporting research libraries and other institutions that preserve the resources which transmit this cultural heritage.
