ARIES - THE ONLINE NETWORK FOR THE SOCIAL ECONOMY
Internet Prospector April '96
Nadace, stichting, stiftung, stiftelse. What do these words mean in their respective Czech, Dutch, German and Swedish languages? They spell out "foundation," or so the folks at ARIES tell us. This new online network supported by the European Commission strives to cast its electronic umbrella across Europe to network nonprofits, cooperatives, and mutual organizations -- and of course, foundations.

Though the foundations listed here are few -- only four -- this network promises to be the European counterpart to the Foundation Center. Moreover, ARIES plans to develop another web site to put grantmaker information online. An ambitious task! According to ARIES, 80,000 foundations dot the new European landscape.

THE CHIANG CHING-KUO FOUNDATION
FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARLY EXCHANGE
Internet Prospector August '97
This Foundation is a familiar name to universities and colleges with a strong Asian studies emphasis in the humanities or the social sciences. With good reason.  Based in Taiwan, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation's mission is to advance studies in Chinese culture and society.  Their web literature states:

The Foundation's principal work is to award grants, as approved by the Board of Directors, to specific institutions and individuals. Grants are available under such categories as institutional enhancement, research, conference and seminars, and subsidies for publication. There are also fellowships available for graduate students, and post-doctoral research.  Since its establishment, the Foundation has aided research institutes and university presses, as well as national museums all over the world. Their broad program guidelines make this foundation a strong prospect for support at the departmental, school or institutional level. For more details, visit:

EUROPEAN FOUNDATION CENTER (EFC): FUNDERS ONLINE
Europe's counterpart to the Foundation Center has debuted a new service, Funders Online. The service is positioning itself as a one-stop resource for "philanthropic information online."

Like the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, the Japan Foundation seeks to promote cultural understanding, principally through exchange programs.  As with the Taiwanese philanthropy, the Japan Foundation offers broad programmatic support for:
grant programs relating to the exchange of persons, support of Japanese studies, support for Japanese-language instruction, exchanges in the arts, and assistance for media related projects such as publications, translation, and film or video production.

Details on each program, plus links to Awards, Publications and to "colleague institutions" are available at:

KOREA FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector August '97
The third philanthropy in this Asian Foundation Trilogy is the Korea Foundation.  Here again, similarities abound in their programs emphasizing cultural exchanges, support for Korean studies programs in this country and opportunities for study in Korea.  They will also send Korean citizens to the US.

UNITED KINGDOM: REGISTRY OF CHARITIES
Internet Prospector, May '98
This searchable database includes charities registered in England or Wales whose majority of directors or trustees are residents of one of these two countries and whose assets are primarily held in these countries. You may search by charity name or by locality. A search will return the purpose of the charity, the year it was established, contact information and area of operation. The Registry of Charities was established in late 1997, and during 1998, the overseers plan to add income information to the records.
