NONPROFIT GUIDES

There are many grant-writing guides on the Web, but this site is notable. Its clean, simple format is easy to understand and a pleasure to navigate. The guides are designed to assist nonprofits through the proposal-writing process and they do a beautiful job of it. In addition to the overviews of and guidelines for writing preliminary and full proposals, you'll find samples of letters and proposals. I think npguides.org sets a standard for other sites to emulate. See what you think.

THE FOUNDATION CENTER -- PROPOSAL WRITING SHORT COURSE

Of course, we can't mention foundations and proposal writing without telling you to go to the best source, The Foundation Center. If you haven't already, be sure to read the Proposal Writing Short Course -- in English, Spanish, French or Russian. Browse the Foundation Center site for more proposal-writing tips and resources.

The short course was excerpted from The Foundation Center's Guide to Proposal Writing, 4th edition (New York: The Foundation Center, 2004). This resource and others are available for free use in Foundation Center libraries and Cooperating Collections in many public and academic libraries.

The Foundation Center offers full-day Proposal Writing Seminars at locations throughout the country. A free one-hour introduction, Proposal Writing Basics, is offered at all of its library locations.

THE RILEY GUIDE: SALARY GUIDES & GUIDANCE

It's not pretty, but the Riley Guide has lots of good salary information compiled by Margaret F. Dikel (formerly Margaret Riley). The Executive Compensation & Severance Guide, including the April 2005 Forbes feature, "Executive Pay: What the Boss Makes," will be of particular interest to researchers. While you're at the site, you may want to wander over and visit Top Employers, where you'll find DogFriendly.com, a list of companies that allow you to bring your dog to work. Woof.

Be sure to check the "Evaluating Salary Data" section. It begins with the Chinese proverb: "To guess is cheap. To guess wrong is expensive." To get it right, there are questions to help you determine how much value to place on the data in salary surveys.

Note: Don't confuse this site, Rileyguide.com, with the site named TheRileyGuide.com.

GRANTS.GOV

Grants.gov is the single access point for over 900 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. Start here to find grant opportunities and to apply for grants of all kinds. The amount of information could be overwhelming, but if you stay calm as you work your way through the grant process, you should be all right. It might help to go back to the home page from time to time, just to make sure you're still on track.

Note: This is nuts, but the link below works only if the I in "Index" is in upper case.

CHARITIES BUREAU REGISTRY SEARCH -- NEW YORK STATE

We had a tip from A. Horwitz about the new Charities Bureau Registry Search on the Web site of the New York State Attorney General. You'll find bare-bones data on approximately 50,000 nonprofit entities that are required to register under the laws that govern charitable activity and solicitation of contributions in New York State. There's also a link to information about nonprofits that pay telemarketers to raise money.
