The company that brings you the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, shopping at Bloomingdale's and other holiday treats, also generously funds community programs. The Federated Department Stores Foundation focuses its giving in the areas of education, arts/culture, women's issues, HIV/AIDS and on programs to assist youth and minorities. As a general rule, health and human services organizations that receive United Way funding will not receive additional separate funding from the Federated Foundation. Funding is semi-annual. Applications approved in the January-June timeframe generally are funded in August-September. Applications approved July-December are funded the following February-March. The only way to submit an application is electronically via the Web site. http://www.federated-fds.com/community/applicationprocess.asp
Ronald McDonald House Charities is interested in national and/or international organizations that have a specific program related to children's health and well-being. The program should address a significant funding gap or critical opportunity, have long-term impact and produce measurable results. Organizations applying should have a broad base of funding support and the management capacity to effectively execute the project. Deadlines are December 29, 2006 and August 31, 2007. http://www.rmhc.com/rmhc/index/grants.html The Nancy R. Gelman Foundation's 2007 Seed Grant Program funds projects aimed at improving outcomes for women with breast cancer. Grants may be awarded to organizations that demonstrate a need for start-up, interim or supplemental funding within the period of April 1, 2007 to April 1, 2008. Projects should not already be funded by other sources. Read the examples of the kinds of programs that might receive funding. Proposals must be received by e-mail or postmarked (if sent my mail) by Wednesday, January 17, 2007. http://www.nrgf.org/grants.html Genentech supports a wide variety of organizations and initiatives through its corporate giving programs. http://www.gene.com/gene/about/community/gfbs/guidelines.jsp One of the programs, the Genentech Foundation for Biomedical Sciences, awards grants to be used only for direct support of education and research in the biomedical sciences in the San Francisco Bay Area. The next deadline is March 15, 2007. http://www.gene.com/gene/about/community/gfbs/index.jsp The National Science Foundation's site carries a huge amount of information on funding opportunities but makes it manageable with its nicely organized format. If your institution has science-oriented programs, you are probably already involved with the NSF. If not, you need to get acquainted. You'll find active funding opportunities prominently featured with program guidelines and due dates for proposals. Look for the red XML button (upper right) and click on the link that asks, "What is this?" You'll be taken to a page with an explanation of RSS (Really Simple Syndication), a format used for syndicating online content that allows you to choose the NSF content you want and have it delivered directly to you. http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_list.jsp?org=NSF&ord=date
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation is dedicated to assisting the poor, primarily through operating and capital grants to direct-service organizations in Baltimore, Hawaii, Northeastern Pennsylvania, New York, Israel and the former Soviet Union. Grants are focused on meeting basic needs such as shelter, nutrition, health and socialization. Within that focus, emphasis is placed on the elderly and on the Jewish community. The Foundation has a new RFP (Request for Proposals) for community health centers, titled "Access to Prescription Drugs, Specialty Care and Diagnostic Testing for Low-Income, Uninsured Maryland Residents." The Weinberg Foundation and the Jewish Funders Network have also announced a matching grants initiative for the Jewish elderly poor. Applications must be received by Friday, January 5, 2007. Do not e-mail or FAX your application. It must be sent by mail. http://www.hjweinbergfoundation.org/subPages/grantmaking.htm
