CHAMPIONS FOR HEALTHY KIDS

The General Mills Foundation awards $10,000 grants to community-based nonprofits that develop innovative ways to help youth adopt nutritious eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. The Champions for Healthy Kids grant program was developed in partnership with the American Dietetic Association Foundation and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. Fifty grants will be awarded. Two million young people, ages 2-18, have already benefited from the program.

Applications are due January 15, 2008. Grants will be awarded in May.

DTE ENERGY FOUNDATION: MINI GRANTS

DTE Foundation supports hands-on energy-related projects to help students maintain their curiosity and excitement about math, science, energy and the environment. The mini-grants typically range from $50-$250, but proposals may be funded for more. All K-12 teachers within the DTE Energy service area (in Michigan) are eligible to apply. DTE service areas can be located on the Web site.

Proposals must be postmarked by Friday, November 30, 2007.

J. JILL COMPASSION FUND: WOMEN IN NEED

J. Jill (a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Talbots, Inc.) wants to empower women and help them become self-sufficient. The J. Jill Compassion Fund supports job training, education, transitional and/or affordable housing for women in need -- programs that break down barriers for women in crisis. It will fund general operation expenses for organizations that fall within its guidelines. Grants are generally $5,000 to $15,000. Priority is given to organizations in OR, WI, AL, AR, IA and OK.

Pre-applications (no longer than one page) will be accepted until November 30, 2007. Approximately 60 organizations will be invited to submit a full proposal. Grants will be awarded in May. Submission guidelines have changed, so read the directions carefully.

MERCY CORPS/NET AID: GLOBAL ACTION AWARDS

This is for current U.S. high school students or recent graduates who want to join the fight against poverty. Participants may win $5,000 for college expenses or the charitable cause of their choice. If students have organized and led a project impacting people in poor countries, or raised awareness about poverty in their own communities, they may be eligible. The Awards celebrate young people who have shown leadership in areas such as preventing HIV/AIDS, alleviating hunger and improving access to education.

PUFFIN FOUNDATION LTD: ARTIST GRANT AWARDS

The Puffin Foundation makes grants to encourage emerging artists in the fields of art, music, theater, dance, photography and literature. These grants are especially for artists who have had difficulty finding forums for sharing their work, due to their social philosophy or the genre of the work. Grants generally range from $1,000 to $2,500.

Applications must be postmarked by midnight, December 30, 2007.

SAM'S CLUB: FAIR TRADE STUDY GRANTS FOR TEACHERS

The Fair Trade Study Grant is a weeklong, intensive study of how Fair Trade Certified coffee is produced. Study grants will be awarded to teachers who propose exceptional ideas to educate students on the economic, social and business lessons surrounding fair trade. Ten teachers will win an expenses-paid trip to visit Fair Trade Certified coffee farms, cooperatives and community schools in Southern Brazil.

WE THE PEOPLE BOOKSHELF PROGRAM

The Bookshelf is a collection of 17 classic hardcover books for young readers. The books are all related to the Created Equal theme, to provide a stimulus for students to think about the challenges America has faced, and where it has shown progress in its efforts to live up to the ideal of universal human equality.

This program will provide 3,000 libraries with books appropriate for students in grades K-12. The books, selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities in consultation with members of the American Library Association, are listed on the Web site.

"History in a Box" resource materials developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History are also available (http://www.gilderlehrman.org).
