A visit to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Web site can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. There are so many health-related programs and funding opportunities available, it takes some study to learn about the viable possibilities for your organization. A quick way to check for programs currently open for application is to check the page titled Open Calls for Proposals (below). Deadlines are listed; click on the titles for in-depth information and instructions. Another link leads to Upcoming Calls for Proposals. Take time to work your way through the site to understand how the RWJ Foundation operates. Note the different application processes for solicited and unsolicited proposals. http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfplist.jsp The Taproot Foundation makes grants of high-quality professional services, called Service Grants, designed to build the fundraising, marketing, information technology or “talent” (human resources) capacities of your organization. The foundation estimates that comparable professional services would cost $30,000 or more for each of its projects. These capacity-building services are available to nonprofit organizations in New York City, Boston, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Seattle. Applicants must have a mission that fits into one of the following four categories: education (pre-K and K-12), the environment, health, human services. Deadline for applications: September 17, 2007. http://www.taprootfoundation.org/npo/ Educational publisher Heinemann-Raintree offers U.S. schools the opportunity to apply for books valued up to $5,000. The purpose of the grant is to recognize and reward extraordinary educational programs that promote the use of Heinemann-Raintree titles or series in the proposed program. Proposals must incorporate a social studies or science focus and must clearly state the learning objective. Deadline for applications: October 1, 2007. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships provide opportunities for continuing generations of “able and accomplished New Americans” to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. A “New American” is a resident alien who holds a Green Card; or has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen; or is the child of two parents who are naturalized citizens. The applicant must not be older than thirty years of age as of November 1, 2007. The fellowships are grants for up to two years of graduate study in the United States. Thirty fellowships will be awarded each year. For each year of the program, the fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program (up to $16,000). Deadline for applications: November 1, 2007. http://www.pdsoros.org/requirements.html The Fund for Wild Nature has funded “cutting edge environmental action” since 1982. Its guidelines are direct and to the point. It provides “small grants to small groups who get things done.” Applicants are asked to “please be concise in your summary of the problem at hand.” Money is provided for campaigns to save and restore native species and wild ecosystems, including actions to defend wilderness and biological diversity in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It supports advocacy, litigation, public work, development of citizen science and similar endeavors. It does not fund basic scientific research, salaries, private land acquisition, individual action or study, or conferences. Organizations with annual budgets greater than $250,000 rarely receive funding. Everything submitted must be on 100% recycled or tree-free paper, printed double-sided. (Wonder why not by e-mail?) Postmark deadline: November 2, 2007. Notification: December 14, 2007. http://www.fundwildnature.org/proposal.html
