FUND FOR WILD NATURE

This Oregon-based fund supports campaigns to save and restore native species and wild ecosystems, including programs to defend wilderness and biological diversity. It does not fund basic scientific research, private land acquisition, individual action or study, or conferences. The fund seeks proposals with "visionary yet realistic goals to create tangible change." Projects must be highly cost-effective and located in the United States, Canada or Mexico. Deadline: November 3 postmark. Decision notification: December 13.

STARBUCKS FOUNDATION

The mission of the Starbucks Foundation is to "create hope, discovery and opportunity" in communities where its employees live and work. The foundation maintains its focus on improving young peoples' lives by supporting literacy programs for children and families. Since 1997, it has provided over $11 million to more than 700 youth-focused organizations in the United States and Canada.

Deadlines: Letters of inquiry are reviewed twice each year, February 1 to September 1 and August 1 to March 1, and should be sent during these periods. You will be notified by e-mail if they wish to review a full proposal from your organization.

DANA FOUNDATION - ARTS EDUCATION

Dana has varied interests, now extending to innovative professional development programs leading to improved teaching of the performing arts in public schools. It supports projects originating in New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and areas surrounding these cities within a fifty-mile radius. Deadlines: Letters of intent for the 2007 round of grants can be filed online and are due by August 31, 2006. Submissions by mail will not be considered. Grants are awarded once a year, in March.

JOYCE FOUNDATION'S "SHIFTING GEARS" INITIATIVE

The Joyce Foundation has launched its "Shifting Gears" initiative, a three-year $10 million effort to improve the education and skills training of workers in the Midwest. It hopes to qualify workers for jobs in today's economy by providing stronger links between school systems and job training.

Proposals are solicited from six Midwest states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Planning grants of $50,000 to $100,000 and implementation grants of $100,000 to $1 million will be awarded; however, a 50 percent match from private or, preferably, public sources is required. Deadline: July 24 for letters of intent.

BROOKDALE NATIONAL GROUP RESPITE PROGRAM

The Brookdale Foundation awards seed grants to organizations to develop and implement social model group respite programs -- day programs for those with Alzheimer's or related dementia and their family caregivers. In addition to the respite care programs, family members are offered counseling, support groups, referral services, training and education in a national network of programs. Deadline: July 6, 2006.

AVON FOUNDATION -- DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAMS

The foundation offers two grants programs called Helping Children of Domestic Violence and the Grants Program for Local and Regional Domestic Violence Organizations. The programs support organizations in proximity to Avon locations across the U.S. Grants range from $1,000 to $25,000, with most under $10,000. Proposal deadline: August 1.

MARY KAY ASH CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

Mary Kay Inc., through its foundation, has awarded thousands of dollars to women's shelters across the country. In 2005, it distributed grants of $20,000 each to 150 shelters. Funds may be used for operating expenses. Look for links to the Shelter Grant Program in the left margin. Proposal deadline: September 1.
