MADDIE'S FUND

The mission of Maddie's Fund is to help the nation's most needy dogs and cats, those ending up in animal shelters -- homeless, desperate and hoping for a new, loving home. Its goal includes achieving no-kill status, and guaranteeing good homes for all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats. It financially supports community-wide collaborations of animal control agencies, traditional shelters, private practice veterinarians and animal adoption organizations.

Maddie was a beloved Miniature Schnauzer who inspired her caregivers, Cheryl and Dave Duffield, to start a charitable foundation in her name. They have quietly given over $56 million to the animal welfare cause, more than any other individuals (Dave is the founder of PeopleSoft). Guidelines and application instructions were revised in January 2006.

ON PHILANTHROPY: THANK YOU FOR SUBMITTING YOUR PROPOSAL

A foundation director reveals what happens next, in an interview for onPhilanthropy. Martin Teitel authored a new book, "Thank You for Submitting Your Proposal," after working 40 years for nonprofit organizations and the foundations that fund them. He wanted to level the playing field after discovering that foundations doing the best work are not necessarily the ones ending up with the grants. Of course, Teitel is selling his book, but you may pick up (free) some helpful tips for submitting your next proposal.
